China's Manufacturing Map: Which City Makes What (A Sourcing Guide for Indian Buyers)
China sourcing guide · 2026年10月11日
If you are sourcing from China, the first question is rarely "which supplier?" It is "which city?" China's manufacturing is organised into industrial clusters: a city, a district or even a single town where hundreds or thousands of factories, component makers, mould shops and packaging firms sit side by side and make one product family. A buyer who looks for LED lighting in a textile town, or socks in an electronics city, wastes weeks. A buyer who goes to the right cluster finds more choice, more direct competition between factories, and suppliers who already understand the product.
Scale is part of why this matters. United Nations statistics, as charted by Statista, put China at roughly 29% of global manufacturing output in 2023, and other measures from the World Bank and the OECD land in a similar 26% to 35% range depending on whether you count value added or gross output. This guide is a practical map of the main Chinese manufacturing hubs, what each one is known for, and how Indian buyers can use the map to find verified Chinese suppliers on IndiaChinaB2B.
A note on the numbers: city-level figures for Chinese clusters differ a lot between sources, and many online "top factory cities" lists are written by sourcing companies. Where this article gives a figure it says where it comes from, where sources disagree it says so, and we have left out figures we could not check. Whatever city a supplier is in, verify the supplier itself before you pay - see our guide on how to verify a Chinese supplier.
Which Chinese city makes what: the quick answer
Use this as a starting point, then read the detail below. "Known for" reflects how each place is commonly described by trade bodies, news reports and sourcing guides (listed at the end of the article).
- Electronics, components, phones and drones: Shenzhen and Dongguan (Guangdong)
- Lighting and LED: Guzhen, Zhongshan (Guangdong)
- Home appliances: Shunde and Foshan (Guangdong), Qingdao (Shandong)
- Ceramic tiles and building materials: Foshan (Guangdong)
- Toys and gifts: Chenghai, Shantou (Guangdong)
- Small everyday commodities: Yiwu (Zhejiang)
- Shoes, lighters and low-voltage electrical equipment: Wenzhou, including Yueqing (Zhejiang)
- Fabrics and textiles: Keqiao, Shaoxing (Zhejiang)
- Socks: Datang, Zhuji (Zhejiang)
- Sportswear and sports shoes: Jinjiang, Quanzhou (Fujian)
- Electric-vehicle and power batteries: Ningde (Fujian)
- Construction machinery: Changsha (Hunan)
- Smartphone assembly: Zhengzhou (Henan)
- Wire mesh: Anping (Hebei)
- Export shipping: Ningbo-Zhoushan (Zhejiang)
Why China's factories cluster by city
Clusters form because everything a factory needs is nearby: materials, components, tooling, skilled workers and export logistics. A University of Tokyo study of Wenzhou, for example, mapped well over a hundred separate industrial clusters in that one city, from leather shoes and electrical parts to buttons, valves and cigarette lighters. For a buyer the practical effect is simple. Many comparable factories, their component suppliers and the traders who serve them are all within a short distance, so you can compare several suppliers of the same product without searching the whole country.
Guangdong: Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Foshan
Guangdong, around the Pearl River Delta, is the most-cited manufacturing region for Indian importers, and it holds several of the best-known specialist cities.
Shenzhen is China's best-known electronics city. Sourcing guides describe the Huaqiangbei district as a major hub for electronic components and 3C products (computers, communications and consumer electronics), and companies such as Huawei, ZTE and DJI are headquartered in the city. If you want consumer electronics, components or electronic accessories, Shenzhen suppliers are the usual first stop.
Dongguan sits between Shenzhen and Guangzhou and is described by sourcing guides as one of the densest factory cities in China. One guide breaks the city down by town: electrical and electronic equipment around Qingxi, plastics in Changping, mould-making in Chang'an and women's clothing in Humen. That town-by-town specialisation is the "cluster inside a cluster" pattern worth looking for.
Zhongshan, and especially the town of Guzhen, has been called "China's lighting capital" (China Daily, 2011). Estimates of how many lighting companies operate there vary widely, from about 8,000 in a 2010 industry count to figures near 30,000 in sourcing guides, so treat any single number with caution. A Hong Kong government investment profile also lists household appliances, furniture, electronics and hardware among Zhongshan's key industries.
Foshan is best known for ceramic tiles and building materials; one sourcing guide puts its share of Chinese tile production above half, though that figure comes from a commercial source. Shunde, a district of Foshan, is promoted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council as a "capital of home appliances", with brands including Midea based there.
Further east in Guangdong, the Chenghai district of Shantou is described in sourcing guides as China's toy and gift capital.
Zhejiang: Yiwu, Wenzhou, Keqiao, Zhuji and Ningbo
Yiwu International Trade City (Futian Market) is the best-known small-commodities market in the world. Wikipedia reports that the World Bank called it the world's largest small commodities market in 2005. Sources disagree on its size, but roughly 70,000 to 75,000 booths and hundreds of thousands of product types are the most-cited figures. For buyers, one point matters more than the size: Yiwu is largely a market of traders and wholesalers who source from factories across China. One buyer's guide estimates that 70 to 80 percent of the stalls are run by trading companies, while a Yiwu trade website says more than 90 percent of shops sell direct from manufacturers. Those claims cannot both be right, so ask every Yiwu supplier directly whether they own the factory.
Wenzhou is known for leather shoes, cigarette lighters, buttons, valves and automobile parts, among a very large number of small clusters. The nearby Yueqing area, especially Liushi, is the main hub for low-voltage electrical equipment.
Keqiao, in Shaoxing, is home to China Textile City, a leading fabric-trading hub. China Daily reports about 38,000 vendors in 2024 and roughly 401 billion yuan in transactions that year, with the district covering the chain from polyester production to weaving, dyeing and garment making.
Datang, a town in Zhuji, is described as China's main sock manufacturing hub and hosts an annual international sock expo. There is no official ranking behind the "sock capital" label, so read it as a common description rather than a verified title.
Ningbo-Zhoushan was the world's busiest port by cargo tonnage in 2024, for the 16th year in a row, handling more than 1.3 billion tonnes (reports give figures between 1.34 and 1.37 billion). It is worth knowing when you compare freight quotes for goods made in Zhejiang.
Fujian and Shandong: Jinjiang, Ningde and Qingdao
Jinjiang, part of Quanzhou in Fujian, is where the sportswear brands Anta, Xtep and 361 Degrees come from, according to a Fujian industry report, and it is the centre of the province's sportswear and sports-shoe cluster. Output figures vary wildly between sources (from about one billion pairs of sports shoes a year to much higher claims on commercial sourcing sites), so we do not quote one.
Ningde, also in Fujian, is the headquarters of CATL, which China Daily describes as the world's largest power battery producer. For electric-vehicle and energy-storage batteries, Ningde is the name to know.
Qingdao in Shandong is home to Haier, Hisense and Aucma. China Daily describes its West Coast New Area as the largest home appliance production base in northern China.
Central and northern China: Zhengzhou, Changsha and Anping
Zhengzhou in Henan is widely described as "iPhone City" because of Foxconn's huge assembly complex there; Foxconn opened a new global business headquarters in the city in 2023.
Changsha in Hunan is home to Sany, Zoomlion and other global construction-machinery makers. China Daily reports that Changsha's construction machinery cluster accounted for about a third of the national output value in 2022.
Anping in Hebei is described in a 2024 press release as the world's largest wire mesh production base and distribution centre. Because that is a promotional source, treat "largest" as a claim to check, although wire mesh has long been Anping's specialty.
How Indian buyers can use China's manufacturing map
- Start with the product, then find the cluster. Use the quick-answer list above to decide which city or region to focus on.
- Shortlist suppliers from that cluster, not from "China" in general. Browse the IndiaChinaB2B supplier directory, read supplier profiles and catalogues, and check the city shown on each profile against the cluster you are targeting.
- Ask whether the supplier is a factory or a trading company, and where the factory is. Ask for the business licence and factory address, and follow the checks in our guide to verifying a Chinese supplier.
- Compare at least three suppliers from the same cluster on price, minimum order quantity, lead time and sample cost. Clusters make this easy because the competition is local.
- If you cannot find the product you need, post a sourcing requirement and let suppliers come to you.
- Plan the import side early. Our guide on how to import from China to India covers the steps, and 7 common mistakes Indian buyers make is worth reading before you place a first order.
Mistakes to avoid when sourcing by city
- Treating a trading hub like a factory town. Markets such as Yiwu are excellent for finding products and comparing options, but many stalls are run by traders, so confirm who actually makes the product.
- Trusting a "capital of X" label as a ranking. These titles are descriptions and marketing, not official rankings, and the numbers behind them vary by source.
- Assuming a famous location means a trustworthy supplier. A supplier in Shenzhen or Yiwu still needs to be verified.
- Searching the wrong cluster. If a product is not on the quick-answer list, ask suppliers where their materials and factories are before you assume the city.
- Forgetting logistics. Ask which port the supplier ships from and compare freight quotes before you compare unit prices.
Which city in China is best for electronics?
Shenzhen and nearby Dongguan are the two names most often given for electronics and components. Shenzhen is known for the Huaqiangbei electronics market and for headquarters of companies such as Huawei, ZTE and DJI; Dongguan is described as having a very large concentration of electrical and electronic factories.
Where does China make lighting and LED products?

Where can I find small, low-cost everyday products in China?
Yiwu, in Zhejiang, is the best-known small-commodities market. Because many sellers there are traders rather than factories, ask whether a supplier owns the factory and, if not, who makes the product.
Which Chinese city is best for fabrics and textiles?
Keqiao in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, home to China Textile City, is a leading fabric-trading hub. For socks specifically, Datang in Zhuji is the usual name given.
Which Chinese city is known for home appliances?
Two places come up most often: Shunde and Foshan in Guangdong (where Midea is based) and Qingdao in Shandong (home to Haier, Hisense and Aucma).
How do I find suppliers in a specific Chinese city?
IndiaChinaB2B is a free marketplace that connects Indian buyers directly with verified Chinese suppliers and manufacturers. Browse the supplier directory, open supplier profiles and catalogues, check the city shown on each profile against the cluster you want, and send an inquiry directly. If you do not find a match, post your requirement.
Is it safe to buy from suppliers in these manufacturing hubs?
Being in a well-known cluster does not make a supplier reliable. Verify the company, ask for samples, and agree payment terms carefully before you place an order. Our guides on verifying a Chinese supplier and sourcing agent vs direct manufacturer explain how.
